Why Burglars Target Homes
Have you ever wondered what a burglar is thinking or what compels him to target your home? We have gone straight to the source to determine the answer: The burglar.
Approximately 83% of offenders said they would first try to determine if an ADT home security system was present before attempting a burglary. A majority of burglars considered the presence of ADT alarms, outdoor cameras and other surveillance equipment as a risk to getting caught when choosing a potential residential or commercial target. 60% of these crooks said they would then move on to an alternative target. In summary, a burglar’s selection process can be summed up quite simply: choose a home which is unoccupied with the easiest access.
Other findings include:
- The presence of video surveillance was also an effective deterrent. Nearly 60% of the burglars said they would consider the presence of cameras or other video equipment when selecting a target and more than 40% said the camera system would be a factor in prompting them to choose another target.
- Nearly 90% of the respondents indicated their top reason for committing burglaries was related to the need to acquire money or drugs. For many of these individuals, stealing allowed them to maintain other illegal activities as well, such as buying more drugs.
- About half of the burglars reported engaging in residential burglary, while in comparison only 31% committed commercial burglaries.
- The majority of burglars reported entering open windows or doors or forcing windows or doors open. Only about one in eight burglars reported picking locks or using a key that they had previously acquired to gain entry.
Burglars were more often dissuaded from attempting a burglary if they noticed signs suggesting that a particular location was protected by alarms. ADT home security impacts a decision for a burglar, and that decision is whether or not your home will become their next target.
